How do I know squirrels are in my attic? How bad is it?
Assess Your Situation by Inspecting Your Attic or Crawlspace
- Walk around the house to look for any holes or damage that may have been made by squirrels. Eastern Gray Squirrels make an egg shaped round hole 3" in diameter by 1.5" high. Flying Squirrels make a round hole 1.5 to 1.75" in diameter.
- Find any holes from inside the attic or crawlspace if it is possible. Twin Homes where squirrels can enter through the soffit, and a Row Home with a common attic will make it difficult to pin point the location of the entrance and exit holes.
Consider these Questions
- How many nests are in the attic? A very serious problem will have a well defined nest identified by leaves and/or a bowl shaped depression in the attic insulation.
- What is the damage to the attic?
- Are there bite or chew marks? Where are they?
- Extensive rafter chewing and multiple holes in the joists and fascia are a tip off that the problem is serious. Extensive rafter chewing for no apparent reason is an indication of a long term infestation.
- Squirrels must chew to keep their teeth short. With a long established nest there is little need for new entry/exit holes and they sometimes will chew an arch in the middle of a rafter. Once you see this you will know squirrels have been in the attic for a long time.
Take Action and Review the Results
- Make sure it is safe to enter the attic or crawlspace. Create noise to scare the squirrels away, then listen for any activity.
- If squirrels are in the attic there will be piles of nuts, an odor of urine, and damage to the rafters.
- If there are multiple holes and alot of chewing on the rafters it is a more serious problem likely ongoing for months or years.
- Liberally coat the rim of the holes with a product called 4-the-Birds-Gel It is harmless, but incredibly sticky and something that squirrels positively hate.
- If the gel remains untouched after a few days, then the squirrels are not agressive, and the problem is not serious.
- If there is fur stuck in the coating of 4-the-Birds Gel, then the squirrels are very serious about nesting in the attic, and it is considered a serious or even severe problem.
- For problems lasting only a few days, simple exclusion techniques are effective.
- If the problem is in fact very severe, lasting for months or years, the Squirrel Evictor and Rat Repeller strobe lights are necessary for a permanent eviction.
- Patented strobe lights from Evictor Products are powerful and will not harm animals.
- In as little as 24 hours squirrels, roof rats, or raccoons will leave on their own.
- Trapping, poisioning or destroying the animals is not necessary when using a strobe light in your attic or crawlspace.
- If your house is near a wooded area use Squirrel Evictor & Rat Repeller strobe lights immediately.
- Squirrels are typically not in attics in the summer or warm weather. However, some will nest year round requiring the use of strobe lights.
